Out of nowhere, Dad and Mom talked about Najwa Shihab and her cousin, Fessy Alwi. Yes, about their names. We know that they both came from Shibab Clan. As for Najwa, her father is Quraish Shihab, while Fessy’s father is Alwi Shihab. Mr. Quraisy and Mr. Alwi are brothers, therefore Najwa and Fessy are cousins.
The fact that Najwa and Fessy are using different family names strucked Dad’s mind.
Dad (D): Why not Najwa Quraisy or Fessy Shihab?
Mom (M): Maybe Mr. Alwi didn’t give Fessy the family name.
Me (N): No. That’s just for famous name. I believe Fessy’s surname is Fessy Shihab. But she doesn’t want to be related to Najwa, that’s why she chose her famous name as Fessy Alwi.
M: There’s no famous name for news anchor. They’re not celebs.
N: Yeah? So you think Chantal de la Concetta is using her real name, mom?
M: She’s not?
N: As far as I know, that’s not her real name. That’s for publication only.
M: Or maybe they’re using their real names that ware given by their fathers. Only Mr. Quraish took it from western name’s culture while Mr. Alwi took it from eastern one.
N: I don’t get it mom, what do you mean with eastern name’s culture?
D: Arabbian name used Bin and Binti. Like Aisyah Binti Muhammad Bin Abdullah. Or Hussein Bin Ali Bin Abi Thalib.
N: So there comes Fessy Alwi? But Javanese people using their family name, like a clan. Surjodiningrat? Wirjoatmodjo?
D: Like Bataknese or Sulawesi people, they believe in western name’s culture.
N: Ha! That’s why your name is using grandpa’s first name not his last name which in my great grandpa, mom?
M: I believe it is. I just knew about it 😀
Such a random topic to discuss in family’s dinner, I bet. Haha. Welcome to my family!
Actually that also strucked my mind, why don’t I have a family name. Only the same last name like my siblings have which is an abbreaviation from Dad’s and Mom’s first name. Or why do Mom and her siblings were given grandpa’s first name not his last name? It turned out that, Minangnese believe in eastern name’s culture, only they eleminate the words Bin and Binti.
What about your name?
